Position Overview:
The Principal Piping Materials Engineer provides leadership and expertise in the selection, specification, and application of materials for piping systems. This senior role involves guiding the (materials) engineering team, developing material standards, and ensuring the technical integrity of materials used in projects. The Piping Materials Engineer is in charge of the general and project-specific technical specification (valves, the pipe and fittings, the flanges, the bolts) and prepares the piping material classes, the requisitions, the data sheets. He does the technical bid evaluations, participates to the Bid Clarification Meetings and reviews and approves the vendor data The Principal Piping Materials Engineer also stays abreast of advancements in materials technology to incorporate innovative solutions.
The ideal candidate of the position will have a strong background in Offshore Oil & Gas Industry, be an expert in Piping Material Engineering, and provide strategic focus in the Topsides Concept Engineering for Conceptual/pre-FEED/FEED/EPC(I) projects being bid in the offshore area. This will include FPSO or FLNG facilities as well as other Fixed and Floating platforms/facilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with project teams and stakeholders to understand project requirements and objectives.
- Develop comprehensive material specifications and standards that meet project needs while adhering to industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure that material specifications are clear, concise, and easily understandable by all stakeholders.
- Regularly review and update material specifications to incorporate advancements in materials technology and industry standards.
- Oversee the material selection process for piping systems, ensuring that selected materials meet project requirements and performance criteria.
- Review material selection proposals submitted by project teams and provide feedback and recommendations as needed.
- Approve final material selections based on technical merit, cost-effectiveness, and suitability for the intended application.
- Ensure that selected materials are applied correctly and in accordance with approved specifications and standards.
- Investigate material failures and incidents to identify root causes and contributing factors.
- Conduct detailed failure analysis using appropriate testing and analytical techniques.
- Develop recommendations for corrective actions to prevent recurrence of failures and improve material performance.
- Collaborate with project teams and relevant stakeholders to implement recommended corrective actions in a timely manner.
- Stay abreast of the latest developments and advancements in materials technology through literature reviews, industry conferences, and networking.
- Evaluate emerging materials and technologies for potential application in piping systems.
- Assess the potential benefits and risks associated with adopting new materials and technologies.
- Share knowledge and insights with project teams and stakeholders to facilitate informed decision-making.
- Identify and write specifications for piping systems. Follow all applicable and relevant legislation, standards and codes in Piping engineering.
- Perform simple supporting calculations which demonstrate the adequacy of the systems.
- Follow all relevant Working Instructions and Procedures in the engineering of Piping systems.
- Check internal drawings and specifications on Piping.
- Answer general queries arising from clients, contractors or internal Company departments on pipe work aspects of the Company’s systems.
- Attend and contribute to internal meetings when required.
- Advise engineering project team members on the piping aspects of project design.
- Assist in the technical evaluation of bids and proposals submitted by contractors and suppliers.
- Prepare formal responses to comments from clients and classification societies on drawings and specifications.
- Investigate and report on structural failures or underperformance on the Company’s products.
- When required, visit the vendor’s premises to attend kickoff meetings, the testing of piping components, or clarification meetings.
- Keep abreast of relevant developments in piping engineering with respect to the offshore industry.
Qualifications:
- At least Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
- Minimum 15 years of experience in piping materials engineering, preferably with significant experience in offshore facilities and/or topside design.
- Good knowledge of the Code ASME (B31.1), API, ASTM, etc.
- Extensive knowledge of materials and their applications in piping systems.
- Extensive knowledge of structural engineering practices, principles, industry codes and standards – as well as an understanding of scientific methods of problem-solving.
- Strong understanding of offshore industry terminology, concepts, and practices.
- Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities
- Ability to work with and to communicate effectively with co-workers, vendors, clients.
- Strong leadership and technical skills.
- Fluency in English
